SERIOUSLY GOOD BOOKS seeks only manuscripts commensurate with its name and mission of enlightening as well as entertaining. If you have painstakingly researched your work of historical fiction to bring a story to life, we’d like to see it. We strive to keep the author’s vision whole and central to each work we publish and to avoid pandering to a marketing fad. Please send along only edited manuscripts. We are looking for works that will sell steadily and will endure in the tradition of : Mary Renault, James Michener, Edward Rutherfurd, Maggi Anton, Robert Graves, Robert Harris, and others. Our dislikes are indicated below. Again, your manuscript must have received an edit before you would send it along.
Please be astute in querying after you have re-read the paragraph above. The focus here is historical fiction but not commercially oriented works nor “subgenres.” Spare us history mixed with vampires, time travel, murder/crime, mystery, romance, paranormal, horror, young adult, and gratuitous fantasy elements. If you are not sure where your novel fits, explain where you think it fits and why. Your query should indicate you understand what we are seeking.
