David Black Literary Agency Submissions
At this time, the agency does not accept paper query submissions. Any materials sent by mail will not be read or returned. Queries are also not accepted by phone or fax.
To Query the Agency
The agents listed below are currently accepting new queries. Please review each agent’s individual page to learn more about the types of material they are seeking and any specific submission requirements.
If an agent does not provide specific instructions, send a short, concise query letter to that agent. Your query should briefly describe your book, include information about any previously published works, and identify the intended audience.
Your query letter is an introduction to both your work and you as an author. If applicable, include information about your expertise in the subject area. If you were referred to the agency, mention the referral in your query.
For nonfiction, attach a book proposal.
For fiction, include the first several chapters unless the agent specifies otherwise.
Query only one agent at a time. If the agent you query is not interested but believes another agent at the agency may be a better fit, they may pass your material along.
The agency does not work with projects created by AI or projects in which AI has been heavily used during the creative process. The agency reserves the right to run queries through AI-detection tools.
Queries are accepted only by email, QueryTracker, or Manuscript Wishlist. Queries are not accepted by phone, mail, or fax.
Helpful Reminders
Include your contact information with your submission.
Allow a minimum of eight weeks for a response. Response times may be longer depending on submission volume.
The agency does not keep or maintain records or copies of submitted queries.
Be cautious of anyone claiming to represent the agency who does not use an email address ending in @dblackagency.com. Messages from similar but different domains may be impersonation attempts.
The agency will never ask clients or prospective clients to pay a fee in order to be represented by one of its agents.
