B. J. Robbins is the founder of the Los Angeles-based B. J. Robbins Literary Agency, which she established in 1992 after working in publishing at Simon & Schuster and Harcourt. She represents literary and commercial fiction as well as narrative and trade nonfiction, with interests ranging from mystery, suspense and historical fiction to memoir, biography, history, health, science, travel, sports and pop culture.
Robbins is particularly interested in literary/commercial crossover fiction with book-club potential, smart speculative fiction, and multicultural stories that introduce readers to unfamiliar places, periods or perspectives. B. J. Robbins Literary Agency accepts email submissions only. Queries should be sent to robbinsliterarysubmissions@gmail.com, and writers should not include attachments unless specifically requested. The agency sends an automatic acknowledgment when a query is received.
For both fiction and nonfiction, include a concise description of the project, relevant biographical information, any applicable publishing history, and the first ten pages of the manuscript pasted into the body of the email. A synopsis is optional.
The agency represents literary and general fiction, selected genre fiction including mystery, suspense/thriller and historical fiction, and commercially oriented nonfiction such as biography, memoir, history, health, travel, science, pop culture and African American subjects. It is particularly interested in literary/commercial crossover fiction with book-club potential, smart speculative fiction, and multicultural fiction or nonfiction that introduces readers to a new place, time or perspective.
The agency does not represent screenplays, plays, poetry, science fiction, westerns, romance, techno-thrillers, religious tracts, dating books, illustrated children's books or middle grade. Because of the volume of submissions, it responds only to projects it wishes to pursue and asks writers not to follow up on unanswered queries.
