Bridget Smith's Current Wishlist:
In young adult, she is open to all genres. She has a soft spot for layered, emotional contemporary YA with humor; sophisticated and unusual SFF; and vivid, immersive historical fiction about lesser-known stories. She loves books about teenagers having complicated feelings, girls who try hard but mess up, clever concepts handled in an unusual way, and a voice that makes her feel she knows the character personally.
In adult science fiction and fantasy, character and voice grab her first; she tends toward the more literary side of the genre. She likes fantasy where characters drive the plot and worldbuilding shapes the characters, and science fiction that feels intimately human on a galactic scope. She particularly wants romantic SFF (in the vein of A Marvellous Light or Winter’s Orbit), big fascinating stories with a moment that grabs you by the throat (think The Traitor Baru Cormorant or Gideon the Ninth), and historical fantasy, while remaining open across the genre.
For literary fiction, she prefers work that includes elements of other genres or an interesting structure. She is especially interested in historical fiction about women, people of color, and LGBTQ people, and in contemporary fiction with a speculative element and/or a strong plot.
She is open to adult rom-coms that are warm, funny, voicey, and layered, with a high-concept premise that leaves room for big feelings and can appeal to a mainstream or crossover audience. She notes she is still not the best fit for category/genre romance.
Query and Submission Hints
- Submit only during the first ten calendar days of an open month (never in December), via Query Manager — not a general agency email.
- Lead with character and voice, especially in SFF; she distinguishes adult rom-coms from category romance when deciding fit.
