About Ethan Ellenburg

Ethan Ellenberg is the founder and President of the Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency, which he established in 1984 after working at Berkley Books and Bantam. His publishing background included contracts work before he moved into agenting, and he has since built a long-running list encompassing bestselling authors, career novelists, children's creators and literary estates.

Ellenberg represents a broad range of commercial fiction but is particularly well established in science fiction and fantasy. His clients include John Scalzi, Catherine Asaro, Dennis E. Taylor, Sharon Shinn, Gail Z. Martin and Karen Miller, along with children's authors and illustrators such as Candace Fleming and Eric Rohmann. He is open to new writers and says he is interested in distinctive work across commercial fiction, while imaginative and visually appealing children's projects are of particular interest.

Submission Guidelines for Ethan Ellenberg

Submission Guidelines: The Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency is actively seeking new clients and accepts submissions from writers at all stages of their careers. Queries must be submitted by email to agent@ethanellenberg.com. Include the name of the agent you are querying, the manuscript title, and the genre in the subject line. Submit to only one agent at the agency at a time and only one project at a time.

Fiction: Include a query letter, a 1–2 page synopsis, and the first 50 pages of the manuscript. Nonfiction: Include a query letter, proposed outline, and sample chapters of up to 50 pages. Illustrators: Include a query letter and 4–5 sample illustrations.

All submission materials must be pasted directly into the body of the email. The agency does not open attachments and does not accept postal submissions. Website or portfolio links may be included as supplemental material, but they should not replace the requested material in the email.

The agency responds only when interested. If you have not received a response within eight weeks, consider the submission declined. Writers may query the agency again with a different project, but should not resubmit the same project. Follow-ups are appropriate if you receive an offer of representation, an award or other significant recognition, or if the agency has requested your full manuscript. Do not call the agency for query-status updates.

The agency represents book-length commercial and literary fiction and trade nonfiction. It does not represent screenplays, poetry or short stories.
