About Mason Rowlee

Mason Rowlee joined DeFiore & Company in 2023. He previously worked as an assistant literary scout at Jenny La Plante, Inc., where he developed an eye for the type of books that appeal to international publishers and film production companies. He also interned at Farrar, Straus & Giroux, CBS Television Production, McIntosh & Otis Literary Agency, and Gotham Writers Workshop. Originally from rural Upstate New York, he is a graduate of Fordham College at Rose Hill, where he earned a BA in English with a concentration in creative writing and journalism.

Mason only represents adult books. He seeks innovative, boundary-pushing literary fiction, engrossing upmarket and commercial fiction, and nonfiction that amplifies traditionally underrepresented voices in publishing, with particular interest in queer authors. He is not looking for children’s books (including YA, middle grade, early reader, or picture books) and does not represent traditional SFF or romance. Client titles are not listed on his agency page at this time.

DeFiore & Company Submission Guidelines

  • The agency is currently accepting queries for both fiction and nonfiction titles.
  • The agency does not represent original screenplays, teleplays, or theater plays.
  • Electronic queries are accepted and preferred; any postal queries must include a SASE or an email address for response.
  • Visit the Meet the Team page for each agent’s interests and query guidelines.
  • You may query more than one DeFiore agent at once; if you do, please say so.
  • Query with the one project that feels most polished and ready for publication.
  • Fiction manuscripts should generally be completed before querying; nonfiction usually needs a proposal with sample material.
  • A general query letter should include a brief summary of the novel or the scope of the nonfiction project, a short description of why you are writing it, any specific credentials, and the first five pages (fiction only)—unless an individual agent’s form instructs otherwise.
  • The agency aims to respond to queries within four weeks; if you hear nothing within six weeks, the most likely scenario is that the project was not a fit, though you may try again if you followed the guidelines and suspect a lost communication.
  • If you receive another offer of representation, email the agent you queried with the subject line “OFFER RECEIVED.”
  • No DeFiore and Company literary agent will ask for money from prospective clients or charge a reading fee; contact info@defliterary.com if you believe you have been approached fraudulently.
  • If AI was used in crafting or editing creative work, advise the agency of how it was used if a manuscript is requested.

Mason Rowlee's Current Wishlist:

For adult fiction, he loves literary novels with genre elements (romance, fantasy, horror); explorations of LGBTQIA+ relationships, chosen families, and communities; expansive, big-hearted family sagas; unputdownable thrillers and horror novels with social commentary; coming-of-age adventures with small-town antics; and novels that embrace the absurd.

For adult nonfiction, he loves narrative nonfiction about inequity faced by marginalized communities; savvy pop culture reporting; biographies of obscure or underappreciated historical figures; well-researched, paradigm-shifting journalism; memoirs with strong, voice-driven writing; and disruptive self-help with a social justice component.

He is particularly interested in working with queer authors and in nonfiction that amplifies traditionally underrepresented voices in publishing.
