About Michaela Whatnall

Michaela Whatnall (they/them; also goes by Mike) is a literary agent at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret. They joined the agency’s West Coast office in 2019. They hold a degree from Emory University in English and linguistics, completed the Columbia Publishing Course, and have worked in school and library marketing, indie bookselling, and reviewing for trade publications. In 2023 they were named a Publishers Weekly Star Watch Honoree. They live in Southern California.

Their clients’ books have won awards, hit bestseller lists, and been selected for book boxes such as OwlCrate and FairyLoot. They look for rich character dynamics—slow-burn romance, complicated sibling relationships, found-friend groups, and other relationships that drive tension and arcs—and are eager to see books from diverse voices.

Their clients and projects include Kika Hatzopoulou (Threads That Bind), Jenna Miller (Out of Character; We Got the Beat), Sophie Wan (Women of Good Fortune), Jasminne Paulino (The Extraordinary Orbit of Alex Ramirez), Anna Mercier (All We Hunger For), Fiona Marchbank (Ladies of the Knight), Taylor Hobbs (Heartbreak and Other Organ Failures), and Ash Nouveau.

Michaela Whatnall's Current Wishlist:

Adult upmarket fiction with a propulsive plot and pervasive themes (soft spot for speculative, contemporary, and historical). Contemporary middle grade that is layered and heartfelt and centers backgrounds less often seen on the page. Young adult with a strong concept—especially hooky fantasy with a grounded setting, big magic, high stakes, and strong character dynamics. Grounded adult fantasy set in our world or close to it—character-first, not epic or high fantasy. Romantasy featuring queer, BIPOC, or otherwise underrepresented protagonists. Adult dystopian and romance-forward dystopian. High-concept adult romance that twists familiar tropes; high-concept new adult with a big hook. Selectively: MG and YA graphic novel proposals with text and art; picture books that explore an unexplored topic or offer a fresh take; narrative nonfiction in pop culture and cultural criticism, plus sports books centering women or queer athletes.
