    Hi Max,

Great cover and title font. Contratulations on your excellent ranking on Amazon as well.

If you're keeping this in Kindle Unlimited, feel free to add it to the FB group "Kindle Unlimited Select" and help promote it, and other authors as well.

Yeah, a TON of terrible fanfiction.

Even the General Fiction category is primarily ChickLit ( and labeled as such ) and it's difficult to find readers looking for mainstream fiction.

But when you find those readers, the results are gold. Especially if you're testing a certain style or new novel concept.

A reader left a great review comparing a segment to Elmore Leonard - "The idea is great and the execution is very good; this is Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross crossed with Leonard's Get Shorty, shaken - not stirred!- with a dash of Chandler. If you can pull this off, you'll have a great story." Which was great, because it was exactly the tone and pacing I was looking for.

Looks like your book was just published last month on Amazon, and is ranking very well. Going to check it out.

You nailed it. I always think the same thing.

I see these same books promoted via Facebook ads and elsewhere, even in emails that I never recall signing up for, and want to post a reivew that says "Really? Sell a million books when your rank is in the basement?"

If they were selling even a book a day that sales rank would be under 100,000 in the Amazon algorithm.

I think for some of those books they just churn out dozens of titles and hope to sell a few here and there for a steady sales stream.

Still, no value in my opinion.

I am working on extending this  post to include email submissions, for when agents request the sample pages attached as a document ( easy ) to when they want the pages pasted into the email itself ( a little more detailed ).

    Great question.

Before the Kindle and other e-readers, your options for publishing your book were limited to hard copies printed through a vanity press, usually a few dozen copies to give away to friends and family because you had zero opportunity to have your book on the shelf of the brick and mortar stores like Barnes and Noble and Borders, until the launch of the Print on Demand publishers.

Around 1997, the launch of Print on Demand publishers tied in with the open marketing aspects of the Internet made online publishing viable. Then came the juggernaut Amazon...

Amazon, and other companies since, have streamlined the process of independent publishing. Now, I think it's just a matter of what benefits any specific publisher offers.

Amazon has an incredible reach and through their review system, the opportunity to get your book in front an enormous number of potential readers who have already purchased on, or are preparing to purchase from their site. ( See: Other's who bought this book also...

    Hello Varina,

    The basic industry standards are:

One inch margins and double spaced text with a half-inch indentation ( or five spaces ) at the beginning of each paragraph, and no extra space after a paragraph. The line spacing should appear uniform throughout unless you have an extra break for a hiatus or scene change, in which case you use a space, then a "#" alone on a line and another line space as a separator. It is usually also acceptable to double space twice and leave out the #.

Text is always aligned left, ( also known as 'ragged right' ). When a manuscript is published, the typsetting will adjust for the uniform layout your are used to seeing in printed material.

The font should be a standard 12 point monopoint font - Times New Roman is always a safe font, though others use Courier New as well.

Your first page has no header, but should include your name, address, phone number and email in the upper left corner. In the upper right corner include your approximate word count.

Hello Leonard. Have you had anyone read and critique your work? First and foremost, I would suggest having someone familiar with your target genre read your work and give you honest feedback during the final re-write phase. It should be someone who will not pull any punches and understands the critique process isn't the same as a pat on the back, it's a valuable tool that helps you see the elements of your work that only a reader will notice.

After that, when you have the final manuscript polished, get another critique before beginning the quest for an agent. You want to be sending out your very best work when you query an agent.
