The reason I signed up is to turn a recent negative experience with HeartLand Boating Magazine into a positive. Thought I'd submitted to a paying market, but nooooo ... jumping over to that listing now to share my experience in the hopes other freelancers won't be misled or disappointed.

About Me
With more than 25 years of experience working with words and connecting with readers, former newspaper reporter and editor Cyndi Perkins is a freelance writer specializing in travel, nautical, business, gardening and entertainment features. Her work has appeared in a variety of regional and national publications ranging from Cruising World Magazine to Chron.com, the Houston Chronicle's on-line version. A former long-time columnist for the Porcupine Press U.P. Magazine and Northern Breezes sailing magazine, Perkins also wrote anchor chapters for two non-fiction books on traveling by boat, "When the Water Calls ... They Follow," and "Women On Board Cruising." She is currently in the final stages of bringing her first novel,"Loop Dee Doo," to market.
A former managing editor of The Daily Mining Gazette in Houghton, Perkins spends her summers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and lives aboard her sailboat cruising the Gulf of Mexico from Mobile Bay to the Florida Keys each winter with her husband Scott, Houghton County Harbormaster. The Toledo, Ohio native attended Western Michigan and Michigan Technological universities, majoring in political science and liberal arts. She studied fiction writing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has two more in the works: "Yoga for Smokers," a journey toward Zen in the Florida Keys, and "Bite Me," in which our unconventional heroines find themselves running a waterfront restaurant on Florida's East Coast.
An avid Yogini and gardener, Perkins' favorite authors are Anne Tyler, Marge Piercy, John Irving and Larry McMurtry. Most recently read non-fiction on her Kindle: Cheryl Strayed's "Wild" and "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott. The TripAdvisor, Facebook and Pinterest addict's blog is found at http://cyndiperkins.com
