About Me
Many people have the misconception that cerebral palsy is a disease. Author Eleanora N. Gambino corrects this, pointing out that it is an injury to the brain, which usually occurs due to birth trauma. As one with cerebral palsy, she gives you an inside glimpse of her life and how other people with disabilities also have normal lives, just Like Other People.
In this part memoir, part poetry anthology, Gambino shares a brief account of what her life is like, the challenges she faced, and the obstacles she had to overcome. She reveals the pains of discrimination, her family’s unwavering support, and her determination to be independent. The author has written poetry most of her life that has reached out to many people throughout the years.
The titular piece in this collection, “Like Other People,” has been inspired by a true life experience, which propelled her to right people’s misunderstanding about disabled people. This work has been published many times in magazines, newsletters, and on the Internet. It was also translated into Norwegian and published in Oslo, Norway. It was published in several countries including Russia, India, and Japan.
Several poems in Like Other People were published on the Internet when Gambino had a website entitled “The Godmother.” The poem “There Is a Place Where You Are Not Alone” was published in an anthology entitled “A Whispering Silence” as well as online, magazines, and newsletters. The poetry in this collection will show you that people with disabilities can love. People with disabilities live lives filled with every emotion, just like other people.
