We at the University of Missouri Press are a dynamic scholarly publisher. We publish books on American history, with a special emphasis on topics including the U.S. Military since the turn of the twentieth century, the Early American Republic, African and Indigenous Americans, and Sports. In addition, we publish works in Journalism, Political Science, and scholarly studies related to Missouri and the Midwest, including Natural History. We also acquire works in Literary Criticism, focusing on Twain studies and regional literary figures.
Note: We do not currently publish poetry, any genre of fiction, memoirs, diaries, or letter collections. Please submit your proposal via email; we will not consider or return hard copies of proposals and manuscripts received via regular mail.
Due to the volume of unsolicited proposals we receive each week, it may take us as long as 6-8 weeks to reply.

A well-written book proposal should include:
- a description of the overall concept and rationale
- a good sense of the readership and market, including similar or potentially competing works
- a table of contents with a brief, chapter-by-chapter description
- expected page length and word count (in Word, 12-pt, double-spaced) and number of illustrations
- an introduction and one sample chapter if available
- schedule for completion of the manuscript
- a recent CV that includes the author’s publishing history
