Submitting Your Work to A&U

Before submitting to A&U

The Market List recommends you verify the market is active and accepting submissions before sending your manuscript via regular mail. You may verify a market status by either visiting their website, calling their listed phone number, or comfirming via regular mail that the market is still active before sending them your work.

To be sure your submission is appropriate for this market, we recommend you familiarize yourself with A&U by reading a sample issue before submitting.

If you have recently submitted to A&U or have experience with this market, please submit a comment below. Recent submission response times are always welcome and helpful to other writers.

From the A&U guidelines:

As a national, nonprofit HIV/AIDS magazine, A&U is interested in publishing articles about AIDS-related advocacy, treatment and care, community-based organizations and campaigns, and artists and creative writers responding to the pandemic. We’re looking for writers of all serostatuses to help use showcase a wide range of perspectives about living with HIV/AIDS.

With any submission, please include a brief personal biography (no longer than 25 words).


 

ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS

Article pitches and queries, as Word attachments, may be mailed to Chael Needle, Managing Editor, at chaelneedle [at] mac [dot] com or mailbox [at] aumag [dot] org. They may also be mailed to: A&U Magazine, Att: Submissions, 25 Monroe St. Suite 205, Albany, NY 12210.

Viewpoint/Essays:

Submit work around 700 words.
Include biography.

Feature Articles:

Submit pitches; please do not send completed stories or interviews.
Feature articles: about 1,200 words, cover stories: about 2,000 words.
Include résumé and/or clippings.

Reviews:

Reviews of film, theater, books, art exhibits, video, music, and other media are accepted.
Submit work no longer than 300-600 words.
Include visuals such as film stills or dust jackets if not obtainable elsewhere.
Include biography.
Preface every review in the following manner:
title of work or exhibit
subtitle (if applicable)
author(s) (or editor, director, artist)
publisher (or film/video distributor, art gallery)
year of publication, length (pages or minutes)

LITERARY SUBMISSIONS (Poetry, Fiction, Drama, Creative Nonfiction)

We publish literature on all topics related to HIV/AIDS, including but not limited to: contemporary international perspectives, political perspectives, personal accounts, and personal responses to HIV-related art or artists.

Poetry can be any length/style; Fiction, Drama, and Creative Nonfiction (includes essays/memoirs) should be no longer than 1,200 words. Excerpts from longer works are accepted. All submissions must be previously unpublished; if plays have been previously performed, please include any important performance information.

Email submissions as Word or PDF attachments to chaelneedle [at] mac [dot] com. In the subject heading of your email, include your name and the genre(s) of your submission. For example: “Chris Smith, Poetry.” In the body of your email, please include your name, mailing address, phone number, and a short bio of four or fewer sentences.

A list of our pay rates for literary work is available on request. Mailed manuscripts cannot be returned.


 

Guidelines for Submitting Visual Material:
Include SASE for return of visual materials.
Please do not send original works of art*.
Please attach a photo credit and description to each piece submitted.
Please include a standard photographer’s release, allowing A&U to publish the work sent.

Only the following formats are accepted (listed in order of preference):

Transparencies

35 mm, medium format, large format (up to 4×5 inches)
color or black and white
no negatives

Prints

color or black and white
no smaller than 5×7 inches
no larger than 8×10 inches
glossy finish only please
Please have custom prints made at a professional photo lab. Do not send consumer-grade machine prints.

Electronic

High resolution JPEG (300 dpi, no less than 4×6 inches)
Also acceptable: high resolution tiffs and pdfs
Contact us for other exceptions.

* to submit works of art:

Please have paintings, sculptures and installations photographed in a manner suitable for printing press reproduction (300 dpi, scanned large).
If professional photography is not available please follow these guidelines:
subject should be brightly lit
use more than one light source
avoid shadows (use diffused or indirect light)
use color slide film
use film with the proper color balance for your light source
properly align the subject and the camera
check slides after processing for color accuracy and sharpness
use professional,not consumer-grade, film
please include a full résumé

Please label all slides in the following manner:

title of work
media
year of creation
artist name
photographers credit
If slides are courtesy of a gallery or artist rep., please credit
if the work is part of a private or public collection please state.
