About James McGowan
James McGowan is a Senior Literary Agent at BookEnds Literary Agency and Director of BookEnds Jr., the agency's children's division. He joined BookEnds as an intern in 2015 and has since worked across nearly every area of the agency, including subsidiary rights, finance and social media. He represents award-winning authors and illustrators and was named a Publishers Weekly Star Watch honoree in 2025. McGowan is also the author of the picture book Good Night, Oppy!
McGowan is currently focused on adult fantasy and speculative fiction, particularly epic and political fantasy, historical fantasy, genre-blending fiction and ambitious science fiction. He looks for strong commercial hooks, memorable characters, emotional depth, immersive worldbuilding and stories capable of inspiring passionate readerships. Although he represents children's creators and directs BookEnds Jr., he is currently closed to new picture book, middle grade and young adult manuscripts while remaining open to illustrator portfolios. He is currently accepting queries through QueryManager.
