Submission Guidelines for Amy Berkower and Writers House
Writers House accepts submissions from authors at all stages of their careers and represents adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction, as well as illustrators. Its interests include literary and commercial fiction, women’s fiction, science fiction and fantasy, narrative nonfiction, history, memoir, biography, psychology, science, parenting, cookbooks, how-to, self-help, business, finance, young adult and juvenile fiction and nonfiction, and picture books. The agency does not represent original screenplays.
Writers should query an individual agent by email. A standard query should include the writer’s credentials, an explanation of what makes the book distinctive, a synopsis, and the first 10 pages pasted into the body of the email. Some agents have different requirements, so writers should review each agent’s individual Publishers Marketplace profile for current submission instructions and genre interests.
The agency generally responds to queries within six to eight weeks. Writers should not query two Writers House agents simultaneously. If one agent passes on a project, however, the writer may then submit it to another agent at the agency. If Writers House requests a full manuscript, the agency prefers to receive it on an exclusive basis.
Choose one Writers House agent whose interests match your project. Email that agent directly with a query letter, synopsis, relevant credentials, and the first 10 pages in the body of the email, unless the agent’s individual profile specifies different requirements. Do not query multiple Writers House agents at the same time.
Hints
